Dal Kadhi

This is a spicy thick dal flavoured with garlic that can be eaten as a soup or eaten with rice, bread or rotis.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup tur dal
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 6 + 3 cloves of garlic, crushed
  • ½ tsp pepper powder
  • ½ cup of coconut milk
  • 1 tsp chilli powder or more according to your preference
  • 1 lime-sized tamarind, soaked for 10 minutes
  • Salt to taste.

Method

  1. Wash and cook the dal with 2 cups of water in the pressure cooker for 4 whistles.
  2. Allow the cooker to cool and then add the chilli powder, pepper powder, coconut milk, tamarind and 3 crushed garlic cloves and mix it well.
  3. Heat the oil in an iron tempering ladle and add the rest of the crushed garlic in it. Sauté for a minute over low heat or till it is lightly brown and add it to the dal.
  4. Serve with rotis, bread or rice.
