This moong dal payasam is so easy to make and loved by both adults and children. Add it to any meal to serve as a delicious Indian desert.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup moong dal
  • ½ cup grated coconut or 100 ml coconut milk
  • ¼ cup soft dates, seeds removed and mashed with ¼ cup water to make a thick paste
  • 10-15 cashew nuts broken into 2 or 4 pieces each and dry roasted
  • 3 cardamoms powdered

Method

  1. Soak the coconut in half a cup of very hot water for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Grind it to a fine consistency adding a little more water if necessary and strain it to get a thick extract of coconut milk. Keep it aside until it is ready to use.
  3. Wash the moong dal and cook it with 1 cup water till it is very soft. Moong dal cooks fast.
  4. Add the date paste, roasted cashew pieces and cardamom powder.
  5. Add the coconut milk and immediately turn off the heat. Coconut milk tends to split if brought to a boil.
  6. Serve hot or at room temperature.
